- Published in Scientific Reports (2025, Salzmann et al.), the study tested whether a single session of DBS-based neurofeedback improves movement quality in Parkinson’s disease, quantified with wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs).2
- Cohort: 10 PD patients with implanted STN-DBS (mean age 60 ± 12 years, four female), each completing three one-minute neurofeedback training blocks to voluntarily downregulate subthalamic beta-power (13-30 Hz) read from local field potentials via Medtronic BrainSense.2
- Two standardized MDS-UPDRS III tasks were assessed before versus after neurofeedback: seated foot stomping (lower limb) and hand pronation-supination (upper limb).2
- Beta-power fell -12.42% on average (maximum -30.59%, achieved mainly via motor-imagery strategies); the reduction between the first and third training blocks was significant (W = 3.0, p = 0.039), strengthening to W = 1.0, p = 0.016 after excluding two non-responders (P01, P09; N=8).2
