Weekly enrichment (2026-07-20)
- The lead connectivity study retrospectively analyzed 44 temporal low-grade epilepsy-associated neuroepithelial tumor (LEAT) patients who underwent gross-total lesionectomy.56
- Roughly 20% of LEAT patients continue to have suboptimal seizure control even after complete resection of the lesion, motivating pre-surgical prognostic markers.5
- Scalp-EEG features—power spectral density (PSD) and the weighted phase lag index (wPLI)—were compared between good (Engel I) and poor (Engel II–IV) surgical-outcome groups.56
- Patients with good outcomes had significantly higher alpha-band wPLI functional connectivity (p = 0.008), whereas no significant PSD differences were found between groups.56
- A Domain Adversarial Neural Network model (“LEATnet”) predicted surgical outcome with an area under the curve of 0.81 and correctly classified 8 of 11 patients in an independent validation cohort.56
- The authors conclude alpha-band functional connectivity is a key, non-invasive predictor that could improve prognostic accuracy and aid surgical planning and clinical decision-making in LEAT epilepsy.56
- The paper appears in Clinical Neurophysiology (Volume 183, March 2026) and frames machine learning on non-invasive EEG as a way to enhance patient outcomes.6
