Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are computational models that process information using discrete spikes — binary events transmitted between units at specific times — mirroring the fundamental signaling mechanism of biological neurons. Unlike conventional artificial neural networks that operate on continuous activation values, SNNs incorporate the temporal dynamics of neuronal firing, including membrane potential integration, spike timing, and refractory periods.
The biological fidelity of SNNs makes them valuable tools in computational neuroscience for modeling neural circuit dynamics, sensory processing, and learning at the network level. In engineering applications, SNNs are particularly well-suited for processing temporal and event-driven data, including neural spike train decoding for bci-and-neural-decoding. Their sparse, event-driven computation also maps naturally onto neuromorphic hardware, offering potential advantages in power efficiency for edge computing and neural-implants applications.
Training SNNs presents unique challenges because the discontinuous nature of spikes makes standard backpropagation inapplicable. Surrogate gradient methods, spike-timing-dependent plasticity rules, and conversion from trained conventional networks are among the approaches used to train SNNs. As neuromorphic computing platforms like Intel’s Loihi and IBM’s TrueNorth mature, SNNs are gaining practical relevance for energy-efficient neural signal processing in both research and clinical neurotechnology applications.
